To better understand how alcohol use contributes to sports betting engagement, risk-taking, and negative consequences, the present study examined within-person associations using 26 repeated biweekly assessments. A sample of 210 U.S. young adult sports bettors (aged 18–29) reported alcohol use frequency and sports betting behaviors every other week for a full year.Across each outcome, the between-person effects of alcohol use frequency were non-significant, suggesting that alcohol use and gambling behavior may not simply be a trait- or person-level clustering as previously theorized. Alternatively, alcohol use may more directly impact young adults’ sports betting behavior through fluctuating and dynamic processes, potentially driven by the dysregulating effects of alcohol.Young adults (i.e., 18–30) are likely to be especially susceptible to gambling-related harms as they are navigating the initial hurdles of financial independence (LeBaron & Kelley, 2021), while also being prone to risk-taking and also developing through a critical stage for the onset of addiction (Sussman & Arnett, 2014). These risks are likely compounded, in the U.S., by the recent widespread growth in sports betting, which is known to appeal to young adults (Gainsbury et al., 2015, Winters and Derevensky, 2019).Alcohol use and sports betting have a shared culture and qualitative research highlights that, for many, the two behaviors go hand-in-hand (Gordon et al., 2015, Raymen and Smith, 2020). People between the ages of 18-24 are at a high risk of developing gambling problems. At this age, the brain is still developing and emotion and logic aren’t fully formed. This means that decision-making ability hasn’t yet matured, making young adults more likely to take risks or act impulsively.

(Mark Makela/Getty Images) Around one-in-five U.S. adults (19%) say they have personally bet money on sports in some way in the last 12 months, whether with friends or family, in person at a casino or other gambling venue, or online with a betting app, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.Despite the growth of commercial sports betting in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling, the most common way that Americans bet on sports is with friends or family, according to the Center’s survey, which was fielded July 5-17 among 6,034 adults. Some 15% of adults say they have bet money on sports with friends or family in the last 12 months, such as in a private betting pool, fantasy league or casual bet.Smaller shares say they have bet money on sports in person at a casino, racetrack or betting kiosk in the past year (8%) or that they have done so online with a betting app, sportsbook or casino (6%). All told, 19% of adults have bet money on sports in at least one of these ways in the past year.The U.S. Supreme Court decided in 2018 to effectively legalize commercial sports betting in the United States. Pew Research Center conducted this analysis about four years later to find out what share of U.S. adults have personally bet on sports in the past year and to understand Americans’ broader views about the impact of sports betting on society and sports.

In 2022, 1.7 per cent of adults – about 338,000 people – suffered acute gambling harm, meeting the criteria for ‘problem gambling’.76 About two-thirds of them were men.77In 2022, about 30 per cent of people suffering severe gambling harm reported that their biggest source of losses was betting.90 And in the US, people living in states where online sports betting has been legalised are more financially stressed, with particularly large effects for financially vulnerable households.91 · ‘Problem gamblers might be hard to find in the adult population, but the opposite is true in gaming venues.’ 92
